Showcase of Spanish wines in Hong Kong

76 Spanish companies will be showcasing their products in the Spanish pavillion of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair that will take place on Nov 4-6, 2010. Several events have also been arranged in order to have a greater divulgation of these products among potential customers and specialized media. In 2008 Hong Kong supressed all the taxes on wine, which allowed the area to become the gateway of wine to China and the rest of Asia in a very short period.

The revenue of Spanish exports to China in 2009 amounted 2.5 billion euros, of which 22 million euros originated from the sale of wines and other spirits. In 2010, sales until July already amounted 23 million euros, which shows an increasing trend for the acceptance of this kind of products on the Chinese market.

Favourable expectations for sales of Spanish wines in China and Hong Kong

From http://www.icex.es/icex/cda/controller/pageICEX/0,6558,5518394_5519005_6366453_4408680,00.html (in Spanish)

The Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino (Spanish Observatory of the Wine Market, OeMv) has issued a report on the wine market on the world's leading emerging economies, such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and Hong Kong. Since 2002, exports to China are reflecting a steady growth due to the increase in wealth of the urban medium and high classes, which account for 70-90 million people in China alone. Red wine accounts for more than 90% of the sales but some local specificities, such as the appreciation of Chinese people for sweeter tastes, should also be taken into account in the wine sector.

The situation in Hong Kong is remarkably different. The 2008 abolition on taxes on wine imports was an important step on the announced strategy of becoming the gate to Asia for this product. Surprisingly, in 2009 Hong Kong already became the second world capital in wine sales through auctions, ahead of London and just behind New York City. The percentage of wine consumption related to the consumption of other alcoholic beverages is 13%, one of the highest in Asia.

Catalan company Espa Bombas Eléctricas SA will start producing pumps in China, Turkey and Brazil by 2013. The company is willing to have a position on these emerging markets which would be not adequately served with only the present-day  production center located in Banyoles (Girona). According to ESPA CEO, Josep Planas, this expansion should get the company back to the growth path after two years of recession and decrease in sales. Despite the crisis, ESPA has maintained the R+D activity and the energy-saving developments for pumps achieved in the recent years are becoming a factor of greater attractiveness for customers. The company is still targeting the residential sector as their principal market and it is preparing some strategies aimed at promoting the renovation of old equipments which are less energy efficient. ESPA is also willing to create an internet site called CyberESPAi which is intended to provide a better communication with customers. ESPA has also received support from ACC1Ó for the reserach on of high-tech pumps for domestic use.
