Industrias Químicas del Vallés to open subsidiaries in China and the United States

Catalan company Industrias Químicas del Vallés (IQV) announced the launch of two new subsidiaries in Valdosta, Georgia (United States) and Beijing (China) to augment its organizational structure abroad and continue increasing exports. These new subsidiaries will strengthen its presence in two of the world's main markets for phytosanitary products, doubling exports to those countries and reinforcing the company's commitment to international expansion. Based in Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona province), Industrias Químicas del Vallés already exports more than 50% of its production. Industrias Químicas del Vallés is investing in the United States and China in order to obtain the necessary authorization to market other products from its catalogue. These new openings are in addition to the subsidiaries the company already has in Spain, Italy and Portugal; local partnerships in Greece; and the 55 countries where Industrias Químicas del Vallés markets its products.

Catalan meat processing industry Càrniques Juià aims at Chinese market

Càrniques Juià is a 27-year old company processing pork meat based in the town of Juià (Girona province), located some 50km from the French border and some 100km from important maritime shipping docks. Their total sales reached 500 million € in 2012 and they export 80% of the 11,000 pigs they annually process. Despite already selling their meat products to Eastern Asian markets such as Southern Korea and JapanCàrniques Juià has invested 16.5 million € to enlarge their facilities and increase their exports to China, Australia and New Zealand.

Ficosa reorganizes its activity in China after deal with Canadian company

SMTC Corporation, a Canadian global electronics manufacturing services provider, and Ficosa International S.A., a global leader in automotive systems and parts, have signed a strategic manufacturing agreement. Founded in 1949, Ficosa has its headquarters in Barcelona and has an operating presence in 19 other countries across the globe. Under this agreement, Ficosa will transition the manufacturing of selected programs to SMTC's Suzhou plant in China, including production engineering, system integration and logistic services, among others. The Catalan company will benefit from SMTC experience in the control services of the supply chain, whereas SMTC is expected to grow as provider of  automotive industry.

Taiwanese company Toro chooses Barcelona as site for its European headquarters

Taiwanese company Toro Development Limited, specialized in the development of digital wallet platforms and mWallet, will establish its new operation and R&D office in Barcelona in 2013. These offices will be located in the city's Mobile World Hub and they will directly serve the European market and also create international exchange opportunities for company employees. The company has started the selection process of 10 engineers from the Barcelona area, who will immediately travel to Taiwan to complete the training before taking their new responsabilities. Agustín Cordón, vicepresident of the Mobile World Capital’s Executive Committee, said that “Toro is undoubtedly one of the world’s leaders in NFC solutions and will play a decisive role in our mWallet program" and also that "Toro has extensive experience in the transformation of mobile devices into mobile wallets so we are very happy to have them onboard and are already looking forward to jointly develop new solutions in this field.”

Catalan faucet company Sedal invests on a third factory in China - 加泰 罗尼亚水龙头公司Sedal在中国投资第三间工厂

Catalan faucet and plumbing sector company Sedal has announced an investment between 3 and 5 million € to open a third factory in China, where already is employing 390 people. Located in Molins de Rei (Barcelona province), the company was acquired in 2007 by Landon Investments and this year is expected to reach a total sales of 24 million €. The new factory will be located in the Guangdong province and will produce ceramic discs for single hand faucets. Sedal is one of the world leaders in the production of ceramic cartridges, of which 2o million units per year can be produced on its Chinese factories.

No Chery investment in Catalonia announced

Despite the efforts of former Catalan president José Montilla (see http://sinalunya.com/2010/10/09/catalan-president-jose-montilla-visits-chery-company-in-china) and the hopes of the current president Artur Mas, (http://sinalunya.com/2011/04/30/chery-includes-catalonia-industrial-plans), the news arriving from China are not of the kind expected in Catalonia. Chery International Automobile Co. has announced an alliance with Israel Corporation to produce in China the cars aimed at the European market. Since 2007, both companies have been working together on the joint venture Chery Quantum Auto and in November 2011 they have presented in China the prototype of their new brand Qoros, which should be on sale in Europe by 2013. After this decision, the Catalan government is already on conversations with BMW's Chinese partnerBrilliance Auto, for its establishment in Catalonia.

Sabadell Chamber of Commerce and Industry organizes commercial mission to China

The Sabadell Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organizing a commercial mission to China for April 15-21, 2012, specially addressed to companies of the following sectors: automotive, construction materials, engineering, electrical, plastics, chemical and consumer products. Catalan exports have increased by 19th consecutive month in July 2011 and they have amounted 5 billion euro, 27% of total Spanish exports. According to the press release, exports to the Euro zone have increased by 10.40%, whereas those to the rest of the world have increased by 18.16%. Exports to Asia have grown by 9.73%.

Catalan companies seeking opportunities in the machinery sector in China

Workshop on intellectual and industrial property in China organized in Barcelona

The College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia organizes a workshop on the intellectual and industrial property in China that will be held on October 10th, 2011 in their headquarters at Via Laietana 39, 5th floor, in Barcelona, at 6:30 pm. The workshop will allow to exchange opinions with experts on industrial property in China about regulations, procedures, registration (how to choose a Chinese name for a brand) and law application, among others. Agreement for the commercialization of pharmaceutical products in Taiwan

Industrial production in Taiwan increases in June and July 2011

The Department of Statistics of the Republic of China (Taiwan) government has released information about the evolution of the industrial production in June and July 2011. A similar growth was detected in both months, 3.61% in June and 3.93% in July. The June growth was due mainly to construction (+11.90%) and supply of electricity and gas (4.59%), which counterbalanced the decrease by 8.28% of mining and quarrying. In July, growth was due mainly to construction (+36.24%) and manufacturing (3.73%), which supply of electricity and gas (4.59%), which compensated the slight decrease of the other sectors.

Singapore entrepreneurs travel to Catalonia to learn from its gastronomy

A group of 20 entrepreneurs and directives from Singaporean companies have traveled to Catalonia in order to learn about its food industry and its gastronomy. This visit has been arranged by the government of Singapore, that helps companies to learn from innovation done by other countries, and Catalonia has been the chosen one in the food sector. The Singaporean delegation has visited companies such Europastry, Gallina Blanca and Damm, and they have been surprised by the high level of robotization in the production process of the latter.  They have also visited the baker and chocolate expert Enric Rovira, as well as restaurants Via Veneto, Can Jubany, and the new foundation created by El Bulli owner Ferran Adrià, Fundació Alícia, a research centre focusing on technological innovation in kitchen science and the dissemination of agronourishment and gastronomic heritage.

Industrial production in Taiwan increases in May 2011

The Department of Statistics of the Republic of China (Taiwan) government has released information about the evolution of the industrial production in May 2011, which has had an increase of 7.82% year-on-year. The production of manufacturing industry increased by 7.72%, mining & quarrying decreased by 3.15%, electricity & gas supply decreased by 0.73%, water supply decreased by 1.48%, and the construction of buildings increased by an impressive 40.99%.

Appreciation for Catalan pork meat in China

Catalan food products based on pork meat have received a great appreciation in the Sial 2011 fair, in Shanghai, as reported by the General Director of Food, Quality and Food Industries of the Catalan government, Domènec Vila. Catalonia exported 14,000 plus tons of pork meat to China in 2010, which amounted 11 million euros in sales, and the present goal is to reinforce exports in the forthcoming years thanks to an increased collaboration with ICEX (Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade).

Catalan government promotes food products in China

Top officers from the Department of Agriculture of the Catalan government are visiting China with the intention to promote Catalan food products there, specially in the Shanghai area. This delegation is led by Domènec Vila, General Director of Food, Quality and Food Industries, who travels together with twelve representatives from Catalan food companies. They all will also attend the Sial 2011 fair that is held in Shanghai from May 18th to 20th. Sial 2011 is the largest and fastest growing food and beverage show in China, with more than 1,500 exhibitors from more than 80 countries and regions, and with more than 35,000 visitors expected.

Huachen Automotive Group to evaluate establishment in Catalonia

Chinese automobile company Huachen has signed an agreement with Catalan government to evaluate the convenience for its subsidiary company Brilliance Auto to open a factory in Catalonia, as a first step for a later expansion to other European countries. Brilliance Auto is partner of BMW, Toyota and Mitsubishi. The signature of the agreement has been made by President Artur Mas and Minister of Business and Employment Francesc Xavier Mena on the Catalan side, and by President of Brilliance Auto, Qi Yumin, and by the Governor and Secretary of the Communist Party in the Liaoning province, Wang Min, on the Chinese side.

Chery includes Catalonia on its development plans

Chinese car maker Chery International Automobile Co. has confirmed that Catalonia is included on its future development plans. In an interview to Spanish economic newspaper Expansión, Deputy General Manager at Chery Patrick Gao has declared that "Catalonia is a potential candidate (for establishing a factory) and we have entered in close contact with local authorities", but he also mentioned that "other countries have also shown interest for the investment of Chery” and that "no final decision has been made". Conversations between Chery and the Catalan goverment started in late 2010 when the former President José Montilla traveled to China to meet and negotiate with Chery representatives and now will be resumed by the government led by new President Artur Mas.

Spanish car maker SEAT is looking for partners in China

Volkswagen-owned Spanish car maker SEAT has had meetings with 30 local car dealers in order to start selling cars in China in April next year. SEAT León and SEAT Ibiza have been presented in the 2011 Auto Shanghai exhibition and it is expected they can be sold in 2012 by the time of the Beijing car exhibition. All the cars to be sold in China initially will be produced in the SEAT factory in Martorell (Barcelona province), together with the Audi Q3. SEAT has been renamed as XiYaTe (西雅特) for the Chinese market.
