Foreign investment in Catalonia in 2010 accounted for 34% of that in overall Spain

According to information from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, direct foreign investment in Catalonia increased from 11% to 34% of that in overall Spain between 2009 and 2010. Total investment in 2010 reached 3.95 billion euros and it was mainly happening in the transportation and logistic sectors.

Barcelona nominated fifth best european city for business

The city of Barcelona is doing efforts to counteract the economic crisis and is improving the scores on business opportunities, on foreign investment projects and on export perspectives. According to a study released by the Observatori de Barcelona, where 28 indicators related to six different areas (business, knowledge, tourism, sustainability and quality of life, prices and costs, and work market and formation) were analyzed, Barcelona is currently the fifth best european city for business, right after London, Paris, Frankfurt and Brussels. The results of this study were presented by the first deputy mayor of the city of Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, and by the president of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Valls. Other results from the same study placed Barcelona in high positions in other rankings, such as #6 in foreign investment projects, #4 in export perspectives, #2 in organization of international meetings (data from 2009), #18 in scientific production, #10 in number of airport passengers and #49 in cost of life.

China increases imports of Spanish olive oil

In 2010, exports of Spanish olive oil reached 60% of its total production and emerging markets like China, Russia and Brazil are becoming of increasing importance. China imports in 2007 ranked in the fifteenth position and in only 3 years have moved to the tenth position, totalling 34.6 million euros in sales.

Mango presents collection in Shanghai for the first time

Catalan clothing company Mango has made a bold move by not choosing Paris or Milano to present their collections abroad, but by choosing Istanbul, Moscow and Shanghai. On March 19th, 2011, Mango presented for the first time his collection in China, where it has 134 shops and were it has opened a new office in Shanghai, as explained in a previous post at sinalunya.com.

Barcelona port may steal chinese traffic to northern european ports

A recent study has concluded that Spanish mediterranean ports, mainly Algeciras, Barcelona and Valencia, may steal up to 15% of traffic to northern european ports like Antwerp and Rotterdam in a timespan of 10 to 15 years. The authors Jacint Soler and Lijing Ye presented the study in the Barcelona offices of Casa Asia and stated that joint promotion efforts and new railroad lines are needed, but that factors such as the increase in the oil prices and the greater depth of Spanish ports as compared to Italian ones may be instrumental for this mid-term shift of tendency. Spanish car maker SEAT soon to sell cars in China

Volkswagen-owned Spanish car maker SEAT announced that will start selling cars in China by 2012. As a first step, the company will attend the 2011 Auto Shanghai on April 21st to 28th.  SEAT president, James Muir, announced that the cars to be sold initially in China will be produced in the Martorell factory (Barcelona province). These future sales in China are expected to help SEAT get away from red numbers (311 million euros of losses in 2010) and return to benefits by 2013, as announced by Hans Dieter Pötsch, finantial director at Volkswagen. In contrast, 2010 was the best year in history of Volkswagen, with a net profit of 7.2 billion euros, an eight-fold increase from 2009.

Catalan software company Zyncro plans worldwide expansion

Catalan software company Zyncro, with offices in Barcelona, Silicon Valley (US) and Tandil (Argentina) has received an increase of capital of 1.2 million euros, which shall be instrumental in its future worldwide expansion. Zyncro plans to land in countries like Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Russia, México, Brazil, Chile, Perú, Israel, Pakistan, Japan and China. Simultaneously, since February 1st, 2011, Zyncro has launched an English version of its blog, which can be read at http://en.blog.zyncro.com.

High inflation persisted in China in February

The inflation rate in China rose by 4.9% in February 2011, specially because of the increase on food prices, which were 11% higher from one year earlier and that rose by 0.7% since January. However, China’s central bank governor showed its confidence that the inflation rate will be kept below the target of 4%.

Annual inflation rate in Catalonia – February 2011

Inflation rate in Catalonia increased 0.1% in February and interannual values reached 3.6%, as well as in overall Spain. Among the four Catalan provinces, Girona had the highest increase (0.4%) and the highest rate (4.1%), followed by Lleida (0.3% and 3.8%), Tarragona (0.3% and 3.7%) and Barcelona (0.1% and 3.5%).

Chinese multinational Double Star Group will settle in Catalonia

Double Star Group, a Chinese multinational company that distributes rubber-derived products, has chosen Catalonia as their base to supply European and Northern African markets. It is expected that initial investment by Double Star Group will be somewhere between 12 and 14 million euros and that the company will employ 75 people. This agreement has become reality thanks to the Chinese-Spanish Commercial Office (OCHE), under the direction of Esteve Solanes. Double Star Group has 140 companies and employs more than 40,000 workers

Catalan chef Mercè Brunés invited to cook in Hong Kong

Catalan chef Mercè Brunés, from restaurant El Folló (Tagamanent, Barcelona), has been invited to cook in Hong Kong to promote Catalan cuisine. Mercè Brunés's cooking was discovered by Chinese gastronomy and travel journalist Annie Leong, who convinced her to travel to Hong Kong. Mercè Brunés will record five recipes for Sing Tao News and she hopes that after their broadcast Catalan cuisine will be less unknown by Chinese people. The selected dishes that will be cooked are duck with pears, vegetable omelette, paella with seafood and meat, cod with spinach and chickpeas, Catalan tomato bread, Romesco sauce and Catalan custard.

 

 

 

 

Polymita will open offices in Shanghai

Catalan technological company Polymita is determined to establish offices in Shanghai by the end of 2011, in order to be closer to clients in that area. These new offices in China will add to those already existing in New York, London, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Madrid and Amsterdam. As explained in their website, Polymita is "an Enterprise Software Company that helps companies to improve their productivity by automating business processes and managing enterprise contents and portals". Polymita, that in 2010 saw a global increase of 20% in sales, will improve the chances of growth in Asia that until now had through the German company Bertelsmann.

Chinese group Twoten Valves opens distribution center in Sant Boi de Llobregat

Chinese group Twoten Valves has established a base in Spain by opening a distribution center in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat, Barcelona). Twoten Valves supplies industrial and nautical machinery and with this new distribution center improves the facilities that until now they had in Santa Coloma de Gramanet (Barcelonès, Barcelona).

Debris management company Gestora de Runes lands in China

Gestora de Runes de la Construcció SA is a mixed-capital Catalan company (45% public - 55% private) that helps construction companies and municipalities by managing the construction debris and thus  protecting the environment. It was created in 1994 and by 2009 it already had 27 controlled dumping sites in operation. During 2011, the company is set to start working in China, managing the construction debris of the ports of Rizhao and Wenzhoux.

 

Catalan clothing company Mango opens new corporate office in China

Catalan clothing company Mango has reinforced its presence in Chinese market by opening a corporate office in Shanghai. It will initially be run by a mixed staff of 50 people from both countries. The company aims at opening 60 new shops during 2011, which will add to the 77 that already opened only in 2010. Annual sales worlwide in 2010 reached 1,44 billion euros, thanks to the existing network of more than 1,300 shops in 95 countries.

Pharmaceutical Catalan group Uriach enters Chinese market

Pharmaceutical Catalan group Uriach has decided to enter the Chinese market through an alliance with a local partner which has not been disclosed. With this agreement, Uriach will have its first facilities abroad, which will add to those existing in Palau-solità i Plegamans and Sant Fost de Campsentelles. Another pharmaceutical company with a local Chinese partner is Esteve, which opened his second production plant in October 2010.

Unemployment increases in Catalonia in February

Bad news about employment in Catalonia. 13,000 people lost their jobs during February, which represents an increase of 2.2% as compared to January. Total figure of unemployed people in Catalonia is currently slightly over 600,000 people.
