The Department of Statistics of the Republic of China (Taiwan) government has released information about the evolution of the industrial production in May 2011, which has had an increase of 7.82% year-on-year. The production of manufacturing industry increased by 7.72%, mining & quarrying decreased by 3.15%, electricity & gas supply decreased by 0.73%, water supply decreased by 1.48%, and the construction of buildings increased by an impressive 40.99%.

ACC1Ó-Competitiveness for Catalonia is organizing a Green Building mission in Singapore for Catalan companies due next September. Singapore is currently promoting architecture, design and construction of buildings which are energetically efficient, the so called Green Buildings. The goal of the government is that by 2030 at least 80% of the buildings in Singapore, both new and existing, could be certified as Green Building, a strategy that is aimed at leading this activity in the Asia-Pacific area. The specific goals of the mission are: i) to do networking with potential local partners in order to know the reality and the opportunities of the local market; ii) to hold meetings with relevant institutions, such as the Building & Construction Authority, the Singapore Green Building Council, the Singapore Institute of Architects and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, among others; and iii) to attend the BEX Asia trade fair (14-16 September 2011).

Catalan exports grow by 16% until April

Exports keep on growing and are currently leading Catalan economy. Between January and April foreign sales increased by 16.33% as compared with the same period in 2010 and reached 17,559 million euros. Data for overall Spain showed an increase by 22.19%. During this period, the most dynamic industrial sectors were chemical, equipment and automotive, which represented 59% of total sales and that they all had two-digit increases. Exports to the countries of European Union represented 67% of the total and those to Asia grew by 12%.

Catalan economy follows the growth trend in early 2011

According to an official release of the Catalan government, economy in Catalonia has grown 1.1% year-on-year during the first trimester of 2011. This modest growth has been led by exports, which have grown 1.7% year-on-year. However, if compared with the previous trimester, growth has been nil (0.0%), which may indicate a recent trend to stagnancy after some recovery signs in the previous trimesters. Economy in overall Spain has grown 0.8% year-on-year during the first trimester of 2011, whereas in the European Union growth has reached 2.5% in the same period.

On Tuesday July 5th, 2011, ACC1Ó-Competitiveness for Catalonia is organizing a 2-hour meeting in Barcelona in order to facilitate productive networking between businessmen and entrepreneurs in the textile and fashion industries that are either interested in internationalizing their products and/or services, or that are already established and doing business in China and India. The goals of this session are: i) to detect opportunities for collaboration, i.e., for joint export; ii) to exchange information and experiences about the strategies to enter these markets; iii) to identify synergies with competitors for project cooperation; iv) to meet potential partners, suppliers and clients; and v) to discover business opportunities in these sectors and markets.
The session will start with the presentation of a list of good business practices by a representative of the Catalan textile company Punto Blanco, by David Garcia, head of the Platform for Production and Sale promoted by ACC1Ó in Hong Kong, and an expert on East Asian markets from ACC1Ó. Right after these presentations, there will be the speed meeting session, which consists of 5-minute meetings between professionals, to finish with an open networking session during the coffee break.

ICEX promotes 14 Spanish companies in Singapore's BroadcastAsia

From June 21st to 24th, 2011, Singapore will simultaneously host BroadcastAsia and CommunicAsia, two of the world leading trade fairs devoted to the broadcasting and communication sectors. The Multisectoral Association of Companies of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies (AMETIC) , together with the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX) are jointly promoting a 200 m2 pavillion for the 14 Spanish companies attending the event. BroadcastAsia will showcase a wide variety of broadcasting products, including satellite and cable, as well as high definition and multimedia products, whereas CommunicAsia, will offer a global platform for the display of the latest digital technology related to telecommunications and information technologies. China's consumer price index grows by 5.5 per cent in May 2011

China's consumer price index (CPI) rose to its highest level in the last 34 months, reaching a 5.5% growth year-on-year. In the first five months of 2011, the CPI has grown by 5.2% year-on-year. These already high inflation rates are expected to even rise a little bit above 6% in June, according to experts. Food prices, which account for almost one third of the basket of goods for the calculation of CPI, increased by 11.7% in May from a year earlier, whereas the growth of non-food prices also increased by 2.9% in the same period.

6th edition of the Spain China Forum in Barcelona

On July 5th and 6th, 2011, the Barcelona World Trade Center will host the 6th edition of the Spain China Forum. It will have three Plenary Sessions that will be aimed at promoting economic relationships between the two countries. The Forum will be presided by the two co-Presidents: Mr. Pedro Solbes (Spain) and Mrs. Uyunqing (China).

Catalan Minister for Business and Employment, Francesc Xavier Mena, has declared that the opening of new offices for the promotion of Catalan economy in emerging markets is currently under evaluation. He has met with directors of the business promotion network ACC1Ó from worldwide in order to analyze these possibilities in the light of the limited funding by the Catalan administration. China, Brazil and India, for promotion of businesses, and United States and the Asia-Pacific region, for promotion of tourism, are candidates to see receive these new offices. ACC1Ó, the agency responsible for the promotion of competitiveness of Catalan economy, has 34 of these offices located worldwide that give support to Catalan companies working in 70 different markets.

Catalan cosmetics company Nature Bissé aims at strong internationalization

Catalan cosmetics company Nature Bissé aims at a strong internationalization process that could render a 70% of total sales abroad by 2013. Nature Bissé has approved a 3-year strategic plan that expects to achieve 56.25 million euros in sales. In 2010, total sales amounted 33.9 million euros, with an annual growth of 6.6%. According to top representatives of the company, this step towards a much greater internationalization is the third landmark in the history of the company, after entering the United States market and after the building of the factory in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona province). Nature Bissé will also start selling its products in China in September 2011, thanks to the alliance with two local partners: Imaginex Shanghai and Joycentury. Asia-Pacific markets represent nowadays the 9.22% of the total sales of Nature Bissé and they are expected to provide 19.8% of total sales by 2013, after the recruitement of Cecilia Chang, former Responsible for Marketing Purchases at Grupo Godó de Comunicación, S.A.

Construmat China will open on July 11, 2012

As already explained on the post Construmat trade show exported to China in 2012 here at Sinalunya, Fira Barcelona together with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) have agreed to organize Construmat China in Beijing between July 11th and 13th, 2012. This construction trade show will be held at the Beijing Convention Center, which offers to exhibitors an area of 24,000 squared meters. At least 200 exhibitors are expected to take place in this event.

Ranking of economies in the Asia-Pacific area

According to a report recently released by the United States think tank Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal citing statistics from the World Bank in October 2010, Japan was the largest Asia-Pacific economy in 2009, with a GDP of US$5.689 trillion. China was second in the ranking, with a GDP of US$4.9847 trillion, but more recent data from the third quarter of 2010 reported that China has already overtaken Japan as the top Asia-Pacific economy. India was third on the list, with a GDP of US$1.2369 trillion in 2009, Australia was fourth with US$994.2 billion, South Korea was fifth with US$832.5 billion and Indonesia was sixth with US$539.4 billion. Taiwan ranked seventh on the list of the main economies of the Asia-Pacific area.

Huachen Automotive Group to evaluate establishment in Catalonia

Chinese automobile company Huachen has signed an agreement with Catalan government to evaluate the convenience for its subsidiary company Brilliance Auto to open a factory in Catalonia, as a first step for a later expansion to other European countries. Brilliance Auto is partner of BMW, Toyota and Mitsubishi. The signature of the agreement has been made by President Artur Mas and Minister of Business and Employment Francesc Xavier Mena on the Catalan side, and by President of Brilliance Auto, Qi Yumin, and by the Governor and Secretary of the Communist Party in the Liaoning province, Wang Min, on the Chinese side.

Exports are expected to grow by 6.2% during this year, which will help reverse the trend in the Catalan economy, but president Artur Mas has warned that this growth will not be enough for job creation. Unemployment in Catalonia is expected to reach 18% by the end of the year.

Singapore Airlines refuses to become a Spanair stockholder

Swee Wah Mak, Executive Vice President of Commercial at Singapore Airlines Ltd., has denied that rumours that were indicating that Singapore Arlines might become a stockholder of the Star Alliance member, Spanair. Singapore Arlines will remain as a commercial partner of Spanair and values the opportunity that Barcelona airport of El Prat offers as an alternative hub to the Madrid Barajas airport for flights to South America. Sales of Singapore Arlines in 2010 totalled 7.2 billion euros and the net profit reached 122 million euros.

Chinese car maker Chery International Automobile Co. has confirmed that Catalonia is included on its future development plans. In an interview to Spanish economic newspaper Expansión, Deputy General Manager at Chery Patrick Gao has declared that "Catalonia is a potential candidate (for establishing a factory) and we have entered in close contact with local authorities", but he also mentioned that "other countries have also shown interest for the investment of Chery” and that "no final decision has been made". Conversations between Chery and the Catalan goverment started in late 2010 when the former President José Montilla traveled to China to meet and negotiate with Chery representatives and now will be resumed by the government led by new President Artur Mas.

Banco de Santander has reached an agreement with the China Construction Bank to develop a joint-venture in rural China that will allow the Spanish bank firmly establish itself in the Chinese market. Investment will reach 3.5 billion yuan (370 million euros), of which 80.1% will be provided by the China Construction Bank and the other 19.9% by Banco de Santander. This venture will be essential in order to provide services to the rural population in China, which still accounts for two thirds of its 1.3 billion inhabitants.

Unemployment still on the rise in Catalonia

During this period, job destruction created new 40,900 unemployed workers, which increased up to 727,600 people the number of jobseekers. These figures are a little bit better than in overall Spain, where the percentage rose up to 21.29% and the total number of unemployed workers reached 4,910,000.
