Spain's economic crisis is fostering the need for a greater international projection of its products and services. Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade is proposing a series of measures in order to provide effective support to Spanish companies willing to sell abroad. Economic support will shared by the central government and the autonomous regions and a new Integrated Plan to Support Exports (Plan Integrado de Apoyo a las Exportaciones) is announced by the end of 2010. According to business sources, until now Spain is devoting 570 million euros per year to the international promotion of Spanish export companies, which is considered not sufficient to back the 150,000 existing ones.

As seen in the graph from Expasión.com, out of the 50 Spanish provinces, the one with the greater export capacity is Barcelona, with 32,262 million euros in 2009, followed at quite some distance by Madrid, with 19,244 million euros, and València, with 9,127 million euros. Tarragona is on the 10th position, with 4.674 million euros, and Girona on the 16th, with 3.085 million euros, which makes three out of the four Catalan provinces among the Spanish top 20
