Chinese group Hutchison Whampoa increases participation in TerCat

Chinese group Hutchison Whampoa Limited has increased its participation in the shipping & logistics company Terminal Catalunya S.A. (TerCat) up to 90% of its shareholding. TerCat holds the concession by the Barcelona Port Authority to operate the Prat pier container terminal, at the port of Barcelona. Through Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), the world's leading port investor, developer and operator and subsidiary of the multinational conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Limited, the investment in infrastructure is estimated at 515 million euros. The enlargement of these facilities will allow the management of 5 million containers per year by 2012, as compared to the present number of 2 million containers/year.

Aigua del Montseny enters asian markets

Austerity measures in Catalan budget for 2011

President Artur Mas recently announced the budget for 2011, which has been reduced by 10%. A vast array of austerity measures are needed in order to reduce deficit, which accounted for 7,000 million euros in 2010, 3.6% of Catalonia's annual GDP. Cuts by the Spanish government on funds previously agreed on are worsening the economic situation.

E-commerce Catalan company Trilogi sets office in Beijing

E-commerce Catalan company Trilogi has decided to open an office in Beijing during 2011, as a first step towards establishing itself in the Chinese market. Trilogi already has an office in Hong Kong and from both the company is aiming at Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia markets on the mid-term. The prospects for chinese e-commerce are extremely favourable, since there are estimations that say that by 2015 it will already be the main sales channel in China.

Passengers increase in Barcelona airport in 2010

In 2010, the number of passengers at the Barcelona airport increased 6.5% compared to the figures of the previous year, reaching 29.1 million. Of them, 60% were passengers of international flights. This increase represents the second largest in Europe, after Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino airport. Vueling was the leading company, with 7.22 million passengers. Among the companies that will seek an expansion in 2011 it is necessary to mention Spanair, that will start its flight to Sao Paulo on March 28th, 2011, and Emirates, that plans to connect Dubai and Barcelona soon. Turkish Airlines also announced that will operate new flights from Barcelona sometime soon.
