If Chinese water resouces were already in trouble, authorities recently revealed that the expected rapid urbanization during the coming 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) can seriously threaten the country's water supply in the next decades. Apart from whatever effects climate change can cause, the increase in water use, together with the expected increase in the release of pollutants into the environment are seriously affecting rivers such as the Haihe, in Beijing, the Huaihe, which marks the boundary between China's north and south, or the Huanghe (Yellow River), to name a few. This situation poses a great challenge on the present and future management of water resources in China, but at the same time offers opportunities for water companies to test their know-how and equipments to help reverse this dramatic situation.

Taiwan's exports keep on growing

Thanks to a strong demand of high-tech products in China, Hong Kong, United States and Europe, Taiwan's exports grew 22% in November 2010, totalling 24.4 billion US dollars. The growth rate of Taiwan's economy in 2010 has been projected at 10%, whereas estimates for 2011 show a decrease to a moderate 4.5%

Eurofragance grows 46% and aims at China and Brazil

Catalan company Eurofragance, specialized in the production of fragances and flavours, is expecting to finish year 2010 with sales reaching 32 million euros, an increase of 46% compared to year 2009, and with a gross profit of 8 million euros. These excellent results have been caused by the increase of the exports, which account for 80% of the sales. For next year, Eurofragance is planning to open factories in China and Brazil. Eurofragance is the third largest company of this sector in Spain, right after Lucta and Dallant, also based in Catalonia.

Small decrease of unemployment in November in Catalonia

According to the Catalan Government, the number of jobless people in Catalonia has shown a small decrease in November 2010. Compared to the previous month, 1,955 people have found a job, mostly in the industrial and construction sectors. However, the total number of unemployed workers is still high, totalling 564.541 people. Unemployment decreased in the provinces of Barcelona (0,63%), Tarragona (0,14%) and Lleida (0,18%) and only increased in the province of Girona (1,55%).

Deep change in Catalan political landscape

The elections of November 28th, 2010, have produced a deep change in the Catalan political landscape. The coalition of left-wing parties (PSC-PSOE, ERC and ICV-EUiA) that had been in power for the last 7 years was clearly defeated by the centre-right Catalan nationalist coalition CiU. CiU has won 62 seats, 14 more than the left-wing coalition, and has remained only 6 seats below the absolute majority. Artur Mas, leader of CiU, will be the next Catalan President for the next 4 years. The Socialist Party (PSC-PSOE), whose candidate was the current President of Catalonia, José Montilla, had the worst results in history with only 28 seats. Popular Party (PP) was third with 18 seats, whereas Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), one of the three parties in the coalition in power, collapsed and lost more than half of its seats, of which could retain only 10. ICV-EUiA, the left-wing Socialist and Green party lost 2 seats and went from 12 to 10. The Anti-Catalan Nationalism Party Ciudadanos maintained its 3 seats, whereas former FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, won 4 seats with his new political party, Solidaritat Catalana per la Independència, a party that clearly stands for Catalan independence. Turnout nearly reached 60%.

The 2011 edition of the Michelin guide has recently been presented in the basque city of San Sebastián and once more Catalan restaurants have maintained a high ranking, with a total of 57 stars between 46 restaurants. Out of the 7 restaurants with 3 stars, 4 are located in Catalonia (El Bulli in Roses; El racó de can Fabes in Sant Celoni; Sant Pau in Sant Pol de Mar; and El Celler de Can Roca in Girona), whereas the other three are located in the Basque Country. Miramar in Llançà has been awarded with a second Michelin star, the same number as Les Cols in Olot and Lasarte in Barcelona.
